When I arrive at your home, your pet and any family who would like to be present will gather together. We will discuss the steps in person, and I can answer any questions you have, or we can discuss any special conditions you would like for the appointment - if you would like to remain indoors or be outside, if you wish to hold your pet or give them a special treat, if you wish to be present only for part of the process, if you have religious beliefs to be honored - to name a few examples. I do everything I can to accommodate any request, please let me know of anything ahead of time if you feel may require advance planning.
Assuring your pet is comfortable is paramount. This is achieved by giving a combination of medications via injection, which assure your pet is comfortable and relaxed prior to moving forward with the euthanasia process.
Once your pet has reached a deep level of sedation, a second injection will be given into a vein, or other route if needed. A small area may need to be shaved to help with this. An IV catheter will not need to be placed. Once the injection is complete, I will listen with a stethoscope to confirm your pet has passed.
I will leave the room and step outside to give your family as much time as you need, in private, to spend with your pet.
Assistance in aftercare. If traveling with me, I will bring either a basket with soft bedding (for small pets) or a lightweight stretcher back inside. Your pet will be tucked in with blankets, for a gentle, cleanly process in moving and transporting your precious companion. I can also provide assistance with personal or home aftercare plans if needed.
